June Celebration at Mission Bar and Tapas
By Cynthia Saunders Quinones

June 2009

Mission Bar and Tapas has quickly made a name for itself as a top venue for live music in the Berkshires, attracting touring acts and local musicians alike.  On most nights, it's safe to say that you will find some sort of live entertainment at the Pittsfield venue.  The intimate performance space is nestled into the front window of the restaurant so that passersby can look in and see the Mission Bar & Tapassilhouette of the performers and the audience beyond.  A deep red interior and long narrow dining space make an alluring environment for both listening to new talent and catching up with friends in a time out of time setting.

Typically the evening's entertainment is musical in nature, though there is the occasional spoken word event or comedy night, too.  On my most recent visit, I enjoyed the avant-garde-meets-antique style of a band that calls itself the Mad Tea Party.  This duo is a raucous, slightly off their rockers (but in the best way) two-person band from North Carolina.  I had never heard of them, but was delighted by the show.  They excelled in stage presence and well-consolidated talent.  The leading lady was singing her share of the lyrics, and rocking out on an electric ukulele (painted red with black flames), while her male counterpart was harmonizing vocally, alternating back and forth between an electric guitar and some wild fiddle playing, and simultaneously keeping time on a bass drum, a snare drum, and a high hat, hit periodically with the guitar so as not to break his stride.  June 22 @ Stage 2 - DrediAt one point, a friend and guest musician from Ithaca who had come to catch the show, John Brown, joined them on stage with some impressive washboard percussion, too.  All in all, it was an exciting discovery.
Beyond quality music, Mission also offers quality food and drink that will satisfy an appetite of any size. If you are looking for something simple to compliment an evening of drinks and conversation, try one of the standard tapas classics, such as a dish of roasted almonds, Mediterranean olives, or a cheese platter.  Mussels, calamari, and shrimp tapas are just a few of the seafood options on the menu.  Mission also offers a good selection of sandwiches, soups and salads for those looking for a larger, more typical dinner dish. The Salmon BLT sliders or regular Mission sliders, for example, served on toasty buns make a delicious, simple snack.  If you only try one thing, go for the distinct and flavorful bacon wrapped dates stuffed with blue cheese, or, for a vegetarian option, the very popular sweet potato croquetas made with mashed sweet potatoes rolled in panko bread crumbs and fried, served with a creamy garlic aioli on the side.  These two dishes will leave you craving more--it's no surprise that the clientele at Mission are so loyal.  June 22 - Cotton JonesAlso worthy of note are the french fries--thin, salty, crispy, and plenty for sharing--the perfect late night snack. And I mean late-night, as Mission serves food until midnight.
For drinks, the options are both classy and classic.  The bar serves six beers on tap and a range of bottled options (including Pabst Blue Ribbon). When I go to Mission, though, I always find myself exploring their vibrant and changing collection of Spanish wines.  On my most recent trip there, I tried what may be my best find yet: the Ercavio, a dry, full bodied red made from rioja tempranillo grapes, a taste similar to a pinot noir.  To be honest, I can't say I've ever tried a wine here that I didn't enjoy--perhaps credit is due to the informed waitstaff who have been able to consistently make helpful suggestions whenever I've described what I was looking for.

Casual talent and camaraderie thrives at Mission as though it had always been there, but the truth is, this June marks Mission's one year anniversary. This is good news for everyone, because they are sharing the celebration with their customers.  Happy 1st Birthday Mission Bar & TapasAll shows at Mission are free in the month of June. Audiences can also watch for commemorative t-shirts and a special compilation CD (comprised of bands and singer/songwriters who have graced the Mission stage since its opening) which will be given away during the coming weeks.  Additionally, Mission fans will soon be able to enjoy one of the greatest luxuries of summer dining in the Berkshires--outdoor seating.  In this season of blooming cultural entertainment, save at least one night for some inspired live music in a venue that is dedicated to enriching the Berkshire community.
