Find Romance in the Berkshire Hills

THE BERKSHIRES, MA—Lilting classical music drifts from the Tanglewood Shed, as a couple in love share a blanket on the lawn and sip champagne from crystal flutes. At intermission, they stroll the grounds hand-in-hand. The air is fresh and the night sky is bright with stars. It could only happen during summertime in the Berkshires.

"Romantic getaway" and "the Berkshires" are synonymous any time of year, but summertime possibilities abound. After enjoying a Tanglewood concert in Lenox, our couple repairs to the nearby Rookwood Inn. A gracious, antique-filled Victorian inn, the Rookwood offers every accoutrement of romance, including private baths, cozy fireplaces and tranquil mornings following the innkeeper's sumptuous breakfast.

Berkshire County is dotted with inns, B&Bs and other accommodations of nearly every description, giving visitors a vast choice for a romantic rendezvous. And no matter where a couple chooses to stay, world-class cultural and scenic attractions—plus an awesome array of dining choices—are always close at hand.

In Williamstown, the 1896 House Country Lodgings feature enchanting guest quarters and romantic suites with Jacuzzis built for two. A bit east, in North Adams, guests can take in fantastic views of Mt. Greylock and its surroundings from their porch at the Wigwam & Western Summit Cottages. From there, a trip into town may include roaming the galleries of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), then walking a few steps nearby to Gramercy Bistro for a taste of their American cuisine with Asian and French influence.

Four-season mountain resort Jiminy Peak, in nearby Hancock, offers complete living and recreation facilities, from lodging to dining to tennis to alpine sliding, and plenty of other activities to make a romantic getaway luxurious and exciting. Eastover Resort in Lenox also provides year-round lodging and recreational activities, with a special emphasis on couples and—for those who haven't found love yet—singles weekends with planned social activities.

At Cranwell Resort, Golf Club and Spa, Lenox, couples can indulge themselves fully at an all-season resort featuring luxury accommodations, fine dining, outstanding amenities and exceptional spa services. The 380-acre resort features 107 distinctive guest rooms and suites, a spectacular 18-hole championship golf course, the nationally renowned Golf Digest Golf School and a new 35,000 square-foot spa with a state-of-the-art fitness center and glass-enclosed indoor heated pool and walkways. More than 30 spa treatments are available.

Just south, in Stockbridge, The Inn At Stockbridge, features themed rooms, along with peaceful charm and elegance in a 1906 Georgian mansion nestled onto on 12 acres. Candlelit breakfasts, fireplaces and whirlpool rooms make the Inn a romantic delight. The Jonathan Foote 1778 House Bed & Breakfast in Lee offers romance with a sense of colonial New England. A late 18th century farmhouse, complete with towering maples and old stone walls, it's the ideal setting for a magical experience. Other B&Bs, from one end of the Berkshires to the other, feature rooms in taverns, post and beam houses, country inns and even contemporary homes. Travelers on a budget will find Jacuzzi and fireplace rooms at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites, Great Barrington, and similarly appointed rooms at the Yankee Inn, Lenox, which also offers firespa suites.

For couples who prefer cozying up at a campground, options abound in the Berkshires. Those who like their getaways au naturel aren't left out either: Berkshire Vista Resort, Hancock, is a nude resort that offers lodging and RV or tent campsites and welcomes day visitors. In addition to private campgrounds, there are a host of state camping areas, where reservations are a phone call away at (877) I-CAMP-MA. For information on other attractions and accommodations throughout Berkshire County, call the Berkshire Visitors Bureau toll-free at 866-444-1815 or visit their web site, www.berkshires.org.

Whether it's a fairy tale escape to the lap of luxury or a back-to-nature adventure, romantic dreams find fertile ground in the Berkshires, the ideal backdrop to make fantasies come true. And what about our Tanglewood couple—where are they now? Relaxed and refreshed, they're winding their way out of the Berkshires and planning their next return.
